Consumer-class SSDs generally include low-cost controllers that are specified to minimize overall product costs. Such controllers are designed for low duty cycle environments and are not designed to support frequent writes. These devices may use MLC flash in a static manner that does not require special mitigation of performance and endurance issues.
By comparison, enterprise-class SSDs combine industrial-grade MLC media with proprietary controllers and technologies designed to further extend the media life and performance.
STEC enterprise-class SSDs use in-house designed controllers and firmware engineered specifically for demanding environments with high workloads and continuous duty cycles.
These technologies include sophisticated wear leveling, over-provisioning, strong error-correcting code (ECC) algorithms and data path protection features.
STEC enterprise-class SSDs also include STEC Secure Array of Flash Elements™ (S.A.F.E.) and CellCare™ technologies that actively manage the MLC flash device to overcome the performance and endurance challenges of the media. The result is an SSD that is truly enterprise-ready, reliable and secure.
